• I launched my current company, Tom Terez Workplace Solutions Inc., in January 2001. While I had been planning it for some time, the final push came from Colin Powell. He talked about courage in a speech I attended, and his words had quite an impact. Thank you, Gen. Powell!
• Born in 1963, I consider myself part Baby Boomer and part Gen Xer. With parents born in 1920 and 1923, I like to think that I have a well-rounded understanding of all the generations.
• My education includes an MBA from Duke University (1989), a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University (1985), and assorted degrees from the School of Hard Knocks.
• I am the author of three books. The first two — one about change management, the other about quality improvement — were self-published. They served as a springboard for my first company in 1989. The second book, 22 Keys to Creating a Meaningful Workplace, was published by Adams Media in 2000 and released in paperback in 2001. A fourth book is in the incubator.
• I enjoy playing my treasured Hohner diatonic accordion, but I’ve found that accordion-playing may not be the best way to win friends and influence people.
• My wife and two daughters show the ultimate in acceptance by letting me play the accordion at home. In a back room. With the door shut.
• One of my many goals for 2010 is to ride a bike across Missouri. If you live near the Katy Trail and wouldn’t mind having someone pitch their pup tent in your backyard for a night, please let me know. I promise not to bring my accordion.
• My favorite quotes come from Albert Einstein (Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler), Mahatma Gandhi (We must be the change we wish to see in the world), Eleanor Roosevelt (Do one thing every day that scares you) — and Steven Wright (I intend to live forever — so far, so good).
