ABOUT ME
My current business (Tom Terez Workplace Solutions, Inc. and BuildaBetterWorkplace.com) is in its tenth year, but I’ve been starting and building businesses for the past 35 years.
I opened my first store at age 11, selling my toys and games to neighbor friends. My business lasted just two days, until I sold out my inventory. But I loved it: being my own boss, chatting up customers, doing deals, and finishing up with a pocketful of cash.
My toy sales became famous. One time I even “hired” my father to staff the make-shift store – so I could go golfing with my brother. Dad got a small commission and a few big laughs.
Without knowing the word, I grew into a full-fledged entrepreneur, starting businesses left and right. Most flamed out fairly quickly, like my quest to install classified advertising boards in grocery stores — or my attempt to produce and market a bank-robbery card game called “Stick-Up.” Hey, I was learning.
I got real good at starting businesses, but not so good at maintaining and growing them. That came later as I partnered on a magazine start-up, went back to school for an MBA (Duke University 1989), worked at a small consulting firm, launched my first full-time start-up, went back to work in the regular work world, then left it for good to launch my current business in 2001.
